Big Feelings Skills Group: A Coping Skills Group for Kids


Big emotions are a normal part of childhood, but sometimes children need extra support learning how to understand and manage them. 

The Big Feelings Skill Group is a child-friendly supportive skills group designed to help children build practical tools for handling big emotions like frustration, anger, worry, and disappointment. 

Through engaging activities, games, and discussion, children learn how to better understand their feelings and respond to challenges in healthier ways. 

Our goal is to help kids build a toolbox of skills they can use at home, at school, and in their relationships with others. 

What Children Will Learn

Children in this group will practice skills such as:

  • Recognizing and naming emotions
  • Calming the mind and body during big feelings
  • Healthy ways to handle frustration and anger
  • Coping with worry and stress
  • Healthy ways to handle challenges
  • Building emotional resliiency in handling big feelings

Group Format 

This is a structured skills-based group where children learn emotional regulation and coping strategies in a supportive environment with peers. 

Sessions include: 

  • Hands-on activities
  • Skill-building exercises
  • Games and creative learning
  • Opportunities to practice new coping tools

Children will leave with strategies they can begin using in their daily lives. 

Group Details

Age Range: Kids Ages 8-10
Length: 5 week series

Date & Time:  Starts 5/1 from 4:30pm-5:30pm

Location: Our Doral office 
Cost: $85 or a package of $375 (this brings down your cost to $75/session saving on the cost of the program)

  • Have frequent emotional outbursts or meltdowns
  • Become easily frustrated or overwhelmed
  • Struggle to practice calm when upset

About the Therapist Facilitators: 

Katie Piura, LCSW

Katie Piura is the Founder of Haven Youth Counseling and has over a decade of experience working with children. Katie is equipped to teach emotional regulation skills to children as her  work is grounded in evidence-based  approaches and extensive experience supporting youth and families. Through her  training in modalities such as CBT, DBT, and ACT, Katie helps young people develop practical coping strategies, manage difficult emotions, and build healthier ways of responding to stress. Katie's child-centered and compassionate approach creates a safe space where children can learn, practice, and strengthen emotional regulation skills

Alyssa Criswell, RMHCI

As a therapist at Haven Youth Counseling, Alyssa Criswell, RMHC-I, works with youth experiencing challenges such as anxiety, depression, anger, and other emotional concerns. She integrates evidence-based approaches including CBT, DBT, and motivational interviewing to help clients identify thought patterns, regulate emotions, and develop healthy coping skills. Her warm and inviting style and use of creative techniques such as art or play-based interventions help children feel safe while learning practical emotional regulation strategies they can use in daily life.
